Synopsis[]

A chance encounter causes Joe and Beck to each decide which way they want their story to go.

Plot[]

The episode opens three months after Joe Goldberg’s breakup with Guinevere Beck. Joe is now in a relationship with Karen Minty, attempting to lead a more stable life. Despite this, he continues to check Beck’s social media profiles, discovering that she has written a viral essay and secured a book deal.

Beck, struggling with writer’s block, becomes curious about Joe’s new relationship and orchestrates a chance encounter with him and Karen. This meeting rekindles feelings between Joe and Beck, leading to a series of secret meetings and eventually, a sexual encounter on a ferry. Their affair intensifies, causing Joe to end his relationship with Karen.

Meanwhile, Joe assists his neighbor Claudia, who is battling drug addiction, by helping her detox in the bookstore’s basement. This act strains his relationship with Karen, who is concerned about Claudia’s well-being and the safety of her son, Paco.

The episode concludes with Karen confronting Beck, warning her about Joe’s past and suggesting that she should be cautious, hinting at a mysterious incident involving Joe’s ex-girlfriend, Candace.

Trivia[]

  • The title “You Got Me, Babe” plays on the Sonny & Cher song “I Got You Babe,” hinting at the romantic entanglement between Joe and Beck and the false sense of security they share.
  • This is the first episode set significantly after a time jump, showing the aftermath of Joe and Beck’s breakup three months later.
  • Joe’s relationship with Karen Minty represents his attempt to live a “normal” life without obsession, though his lingering feelings for Beck undermine it.
  • The ferry scene where Joe and Beck reconnect was filmed on a working commuter ferry in New York, requiring special coordination for filming during active service hours.
  • Karen Minty confronting Beck was not part of Caroline Kepnes’ novel; the scene was added to give Karen more agency and to foreshadow Joe’s darker side through another woman’s perspective.
  • Beck’s viral essay and book deal mark her first major professional success, contrasting with her earlier insecurities and failures in the writing world.
  • Joe’s decision to help Claudia detox in the bookstore basement parallels his earlier pattern of using that space for both care and control.
  • This is the only episode where both of Joe’s romantic relationships (with Karen and Beck) overlap in real time on screen.
  • Karen’s warning to Beck about Candace is the clearest suggestion so far that Joe may have harmed his ex, which had only been implied previously.
  • The episode’s events set up the unraveling of Joe’s facade as Beck begins to question his past, leading into the final arc of the season.
