Production[]
On March 24, 2023, it was announced that You was renewed for a fifth and final season.[3] Series creator Sara Gamble will step down from her role as showrunner and fellow exec producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo will take over as showrunners.[11]
Season 5 has 8 producers across 10 episodes. 7 producers contributed a single episode while Marcos Siega produced 3 episodes (1, 2 and 9). Although Lee Toland Krieger did just 1 episode in the final season, it’s very interesting to note he did the initial pilot of the series and produced only the finale to close out the series.
In addition to a wide swath of producer talent contributing to season 5, the prior 4 season’s Show Runner, Sera Gamble, did not return for season 5. Taking her spot as Co-Show Runners were Justin W. Lo and Michael Foley who had contributed as writers throughout the series. This might explain why there were a lot of synergies with prior seasons yet enough fresh perspective to keep the twists and turns coming.
Casting[]
On March 8, 2024, Madeline Brewer was cast as a series regular.[12]
On March 20, 2024, Anna Camp and Griffin Matthews were cast as series regulars.[13]
Casting Notes[]
There were many speculations about which characters would return from prior seasons to close out the series, and for the most part, many were guessed correctly. But, there were some notable misses. The biggest had to be the absence of Ellie Alves played by Jenna Ortega. Not only would she have been a fan favorite to seek revenge, her rise in popularity would have made her a fantastic addition in its own rite. However, that was also the very reason she didn’t appear. It seems her massive success made it too difficult for her to join the cast. Maybe it was a timing issue, maybe it was a financial issue but nonetheless, season 5 had to go on without her. The other notable is the lack of flashbacks related to Love Quinn played by Victoria Pedretti. Although dead, she was still Henry’s mother and an integral part of Joe’s history so many thought she would have a significant number of flashbacks to round out the series. According to one of the new co-show runners, Michael Foley, he shared that Love is a popular character but the storyline had basically run its course.
Despite that, it still left a plethora of folks (all outlined in The Cast section) with more than enough motivation to make their way back into Joe’s world. One thing about season 5, if you liked any of the prior season’s characters, dead or alive, there’s a good chance you saw a glimpse of them in one or more of the 10 episodes.
Filming & Set Notes[]
If you’re a Penn Badgley fan you may have spent the six years between 2007 and 2012, watching one of his other projects. It’s not a tough one to guess…teenage social elites scheming their way through life, “kids” living with the freedoms of twenty-somethings, all while enjoying a life of leisure only available to the ultra wealthy??? This can only describe what you’ve already guessed: Gossip Girl. And if you watched it, you probably recognized more than one backdrop throughout Season 5 of YOU. It was a bit of a ‘coming home moment’ for Penn as he filmed on the same stage where much of GG was filmed. And the street scenes…especially the one with the familiar green awning, happened to be exactly the same from when he would visit the upper East Side back in his earlier career. But, there’s no way to mistake the fact that YOU is a far cry from his past gigs. The writing and production teams make sure the narrative style along with meticulous scene details create an eerie backdrop fit for the final season.
From the ritzy apartments to Mooney’s creepy basement, artists, graphic designers, painters and carpenters created detailed sets in record time. Joe and Kate’s apartment has Kate’s style but Joe’s affinity for rare books. The design is intentional and was inspired by the Drake so if you’ve stayed there, you may sense familiarity with their apartment. And speaking of books, each book in Mooney’s is real. They were curated and sorted into categories to add to the authenticity of the store. Even the basement was a work of art. Team members took a week to “age” the space with everything from brick work formed out of paper to dust created from layered cocoa powder.
The series itself was renewed for a 5th season in March of 2023 but the writing and filming were delayed due to the writer (WGA) and actor (SAG AFTRA) strikes that started in May and July in 2023, respectively. Eventually, production began in March of 2024 and wrapped up August 15th, 2024.
