Roald, like many of his friends is from a family of aristocrats. He is a long-standing friend of Kate's who is fiercely loyal and also hides a dark side. He has been in love with Kate since they were young. When Joe threatens his chances of a romantic relationship, he tries to pin Gemma’s murder on him and proceeds to hunt him down in the woods.
Biography[]
Joe Goldberg, under the alias of Professor Jonathan Moore, first meets Roald at a party in Sundry House, mentioning that he was famous for his boats, one-night stands, and "alarming knife collection".
After the party, two of Roald's friends, Malcolm Harding and Simon Soo, ended up killed, and Roald suspected Joe of being their killer (he is correct, but Joe committed the killings under his "Rhys Montrose" split personality and doesn't remember them). Roald advises Lady Phoebe Borehall-Blaxworth to invite them all to a weekend at her Hampshire country house.
During the gateaway, Roald confronts Joe, stating his dislike of Malcolm and Simon and threatening him, culminating with him shoving Joe out of a window when Joe breaks into his room and finds private photos Roald took of Kate, although Joe sustains no major injuries from the fall.
After getting high on cocaine, Roald finds Joe next to Gemma Graham-Greene's corpse and accuses Joe of murdering Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma. Rather than turning him over to the police, Roald decides to kill Joe and use his connections with his uncle, a judge, to get off scot-free. After giving him a head start, Roald chases Joe into the woods but is quickly disarmed and knocked out by Joe, who, under his "Rhys" personality, chains Roald and himself up in the Hampshire manor's dungeons. "Rhys" unsuccessfully attempts to convince Joe to kill Roald and subsequently sets the dungeon on fire. Roald comes to them shortly after and is horrified and confused by their situation. Joe frees himself and bergrudingly frees Roald as well, and both men escape with the help of Kate Galvin.
After the misadventure, Roald leaves London to avoid the Eat-the-Rich killer and no longer believes in Joe's guilt. He reappears in the finale, drinking with his friends at another party in Sundry House, which was owned by Blessing and Sophie after the death of Adam Pratt. In the epilogue, Joe mentions that he "accidentally" shot a friend of his during a hunting trip.
