Episode 4 opens with Joe's inner voice contemplating an affair with Bronte, as he shares breakfast with his son. Henry mentions how he has been trying to get George to read fantasy. Joe uses this as reassurance that he must be doing something right as a father. Kate enters, visibly upset with Joe, initially ignoring his “good morning”. After Kate sends Henry off to get ready for school, their conversation from the night before resurfaces. She exits by saying how she is going to fire her sister and how there are ways to hurt people, without hurting them.

Joe showers and lays out his plan to let Kate think her plan is working while Joe is masterminding the blackmail on Reagan and Maddie. Joe has a vision of Bronte agreeing with his master plan and calling him a genius for it, he pleases himself to this thought.

Joe heads to the bookstore basement where he has been keeping Maddie and tries to convince her to impersonate her twin sister. At first Maddie thinks it’s a stupid plan. To practice, Joe makes Maddie say “Hello, My name is Reagan Lockwood-Jacobs” to improve her impression. Joe slowly gives Maddie the self confidence that she needs in order to convince others that she can be Reagan.

Upstairs, Bronte knocks over a bookshelf and ends up stuck underneath it. Randomly this increases Joe’s sexual fantasy imagination of her as he helps her out from underneath the knocked over shelf. The rescue is followed with causal flirting and hand touches. She was moving it to create extra space for what Joe thinks is a preemptive re-open. Joe internally knows it is not a good idea with Maddie in the basement. They continue to talk about the a-word, affair, and they agree that they are on the same page of “friends”. She urges him that she wants to read more of his fantasy pieces. He has a brief flashback to when he imagined Bronte sexually pleasing him at his desk while writing. Joe's love for Bronte continues.

Kate and Reagan, meet at their office as Kate prepares to fire her for embezzling money from the business. Reagan uncovers how Kate's cover up from London was to protect Joe, as he was the killer all along. Reagan turns the table on Kate, revealing that she has been compiling all the little details she has noticed and is working with an investigation team to prove that Uncle Bob was killed before he was hung. She threatens she will go to the police with that evidence if Kate doesn’t step down. Kate now sees the threat that Reagan poses for not only her husband but for herself as well.

Back at the bookstore Joe agrees to read Bronte's last work over a cup of coffee. Joe loves her take on toxic love and Bronte loves the feedback. Joe’s inner voice reveals that Bronte may be the one who is dark on the inside with her writing but also dark on the outside. She remarks how she believes in "Chaotic good”, morally great but willing to beast out for what the person wants. Bronte uncovers how Maddie must become chaotic evil to suit the part of Reagan.

Joe goes back to the basement to speak to Maddie about his new found solution. Joe goes on a monologue rampage, embodying Reagan hashing out why Maddie will never get Harrison in order to sway her into character. Maddie officially channels her inner Reagan and gets Joe to believe his ridiculous plan might work after all.

At the end of the day Kate and Joe talk about how Reagan is going to expose the both of them if Kate doesn't step down from CEO. Joe shares that he initially thinks Reagan is bluffing. Kate assures him that she is not. Kate voices that the best course of action would be to concede to Reagan–Kate believes there are no other options whatsoever. Meanwhile, Joe pushes back on the idea. From Kate’s engagement with Reagan earlier in the day, she noticed it would be incredibly easy for her to come home and give Joe the green light to take Reagan out of this world. At first Joe’s eyes light up, he sees a glimpse of what he wishes she would truly feel for him. But Kate says the contrary, that she hates she thinks that way, and should never go that route. She mentions how with her resignation there still might be a chance at a normal life, especially with Henry.

The next day Joe, while shielding his identity with a ski mask, breaks into Reagan's home in broad daylight. Swiftly disarming her security systems and lurking through the home, he finds Reagan doing a pre-recorded virtual yoga class. Joe attempts to capture her but she fights back, kicking Joe into her pool. Reagan hits Joe over the head with a pool que, knocking him to the ground. Reagan mounts Joe in an attempt to choke the intruder. She takes his mask off to unveil its Joe. Reagan now knows Joe is guilty, and so is Kate; she runs out into the backyard. Joe catches her and knocks her unconscious with a bowling pin.

Back at the bookstore Bronte snoops into Joe's office and reads what Joe has been working on", not a book but his sexual writing about Bronte. Meanwhile, in the basement Joe drags Reagan into the glass cage with Maddie. Maddie breaks down and leans over to check if her sister is alive. Joe then gives Maddie an ultimatum: kill your sister and then impersonate her or they both die.

Flashforward to Bronte's event she has set up in the bookstore. Bronte now knowing how Joe feels is acting very weird and flirtatious.

Upstairs Joe cashes out a customer and thanks them for coming to the event. His attention shifts to Bronte and Clayton, they seem to be having a disagreeing conversation. Clayton forcefully puts his hand on Bronte, gripping her right arm. Joe, witnessing a blatant act of assault in his store, rushes over to protect Bronte. At first, Joe politely asks Clayton to leave" after the initial disturbance. Clayton makes a sly yet dirty remark to try and piss off Joe. Joe then proceeds to grab Clayton by the collar of his leather jacket, pushing and holding him against the wall. Clayton is shocked, but Joe threatens him to never put a hand on Bronte like that again–Bronte and Phoenix are both stunned as well. Bronte is overwhelmed and steps outside to catch a quick breath–Joe worries that it was a bit too much for her to handle. Joe follows Bronte into the alley and she breaks down crying. She is confused at Joe's romantic act, He opens up about his feelings and finds it incredibly easy to to have feelings for her and to write about someone like her. Bronte is upset at herself for feeling these feelings towards a married man.

Joe checks the live feed to the basement on his phone and believes Maddie and Reagan have bonded. It looks as if one is laying on the other in a comforting manner. When Joe goes down to the basement, he takes a closer look only to see that Maddie has actually killed her sister. While Reagan's corpse lays across Maddie's lap, she strokes through Reagan's hair and tells Joe that he was right about Reagan. She explains how out of all people to respect her, her sister respected her the least. Joe is unexpectedly caught off guard–shocked Maddie was able to muster together the courage to kill her.
