𝐘𝐎𝐔 seem completely incapable of understanding me building an entire life here, the one that I am proud of one that mirrors who I am, and one that I would like to continue living without your constant fucking interference!
―Kate Galvin.

Katherine "Kate" Lockwood-Goldberg, formerly Kate Galvin, is a main character in the fourth season of Netflix's You, serving as the titular love interest. Kate is an art dealer in whom Joe becomes interested. She is the estranged daughter of Tom Lockwood, a powerful activist investor with whom she cut ties because of the harm his business dealings have done to the world. As a result, Kate chooses not to identify with the British upper class despite being surrounded by wealthy and aristocratic friends. She is portrayed by Charlotte Ritchie.

Kate begins the fourth season in a relationship with Malcolm Harding, an obnoxious professor at the college where Joe teaches under his "Jonathan Moore" identity. After Malcolm is murdered, Joe follows Kate around to protect her, and the two become closer and eventually have sex. Their relationship escalates during a getaway to Lady Phoebe's family estate, where Kate reveals her family background to Joe. That night, Kate discovers her friend Gemma murdered in her bedroom, and she and Joe hide the body, after which Joe reveals he is being framed for Malcolm's murder. After the real killer, Rhys Montrose, imprisons Joe in an underground dungeon alongside Roald Walker-Burton, Kate's childhood friend, Kate rescues them. Days later, Kate asks Joe out on a date, but he declines. However, Joe eventually relents and admits his feelings for Kate, and the two begin dating.

Kate's father soon arrives in London, where he proposes that Kate take over the family business. Kate vehemently declines, but Tom reveals he has manipulated her career even after their estrangement, leaving her devastated. Joe later kills Tom and attempts suicide, but the police rescue him. Kate covers up Joe's involvement in the death of Rhys Montrose, which she learns was ordered by her father. Joe tells her his real name, and the two move back to New York City, where Kate takes over her father's company and reshapes it to have a more philanthropic intent. She helps rehabilitate Joe's public image, making him a celebrated figure in the media.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Kate Galvin (born Kate Lockwood) was born from the marriage of the famous American billionaire Tom Lockwood and Greta Galvin, a British model. Kate was always her father's favorite child, with him always stating that he wanted her to take over the business in his place. Kate also had six paternal siblings: Teddy, the twins Reagan and Maddie, and three unnamed siblings.

She’s smart, independent, suspicious, misses nothing. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, a brick wall to everyone else. The daughter of a chaotic, bohemian single mother, Kate worked hard to create the life she now leads. She’s an art gallery director whose job means managing tempestuous artists. Kate tends to be “the adult in the room,” and has embraced the moniker of “icy bitch.” She’s especially protective of best friend Lady Phoebe, a sweet and trusting person whose extreme wealth and fame tend to attract opportunists. Kate prefers “arrangements” to love, which is why she dates fun but self-centered partier Malcolm. When Malcolm invites Jonathan, an American outsider of no apparent means, into their privileged world, Kate not only immediately dislikes him, she strongly suspects something about the man is not what he seems.[3]

Kate's mother, Greta, was a beautiful but unstable model. When Kate was 15, her mother had a break down over a man, slitting her wrists and being hospitalized for an unspecified amount of time. Kate was sent to a boarding school in Rhode Island. Kate was always expected to have it all together and was never allowed to show emotion around her mother. Even when her grandparent's died, her mother refused to even look at her unless she remained perfectly stoic.

Kate's father, Tom Lockwood, is something called an activist investor, a corporate raider and there isn't an industry he hasn't had his hands in. He's one of the more powerful men on the planet. Kate's family is more wealthy than anyone in her social group. Kate doesn't go by Lockwood due to how her father makes money by stripping businesses for parts, destroying workers' lives for shareholders profits, addition to the backroom deals to sic police on protesters, cleansing of a CEO's record of sexual assault or paid to have well-water toxicity reports falsified, which resulted in several children getting cancer and the company made £400 millions ("Hampsie"). She cut off contact with him when she was twenty years old although he continues to try to force himself into her life in various ways.

In "The Death of Jonathan Moore", Joe and Kate moved to New York after she inherited the business, which included the empire, when her father died.

Appearance[]

Kate Lockwood is a figure who exudes elegance and sophistication in her casual attire. She is often seen well-dressed in a relaxed manner, blending contemporary fashion with a touch of class.

Her brown hair is carefully styled, usually in a practical yet elegant fashion. Her green eyes, inherited from her father, are a striking feature that complements her determined and intelligent expression. Kate embodies a sense of fashion that balances comfort with good taste, opting for pieces that are not only stylish but also practical for her dynamic lifestyle. Her appearance reflects not only her position in society but also her strong and independent personality, ready to tackle challenges both in the business world and in her personal life.

Personality[]

Kate, despite being seen as a prodigy in her father's business empire during her youth, chose a path of independence that set her apart from her siblings and her father. Unlike her brothers and sisters, Kate distanced herself from the vast Lockwood empire, seeking autonomy and always trying forging her own path.

Her decision to cut ties with her father was rooted in their strained relationship, which has often led her to conceal her emotions, earning her a reputation for being aloof and distant. Kate's personality is marked by a strong will and a determined independence, traits that have shaped her into a capable and resilient individual in her own right.

Despite her outwardly cool demeanor, Kate possesses a keen intellect and strategic mindset, qualities that served her well as she carved out her own career away from the family business. Her reserved nature and ability to mask her feelings are a reflection of her desire to maintain control over her own life and decisions, separate from the expectations and pressures of her powerful family background. In essence, Kate Lockwood is a complex individual whose journey toward independence has defined her character. Her perceived coldness masks a depth of strength and resilience, shaped by her quest for autonomy and her resolve to chart her own course in life.
