Premise[]
Now living in London, Joe tries to lay low and resist old habits... until he's forced to tie up loose ends and bond with a circle of wealthy socialites.
Plot[]
Joe starts episode one in his new life as Johnathon, a literary professor in England. In a flashback we see that prior to coming to London, Joe had spent months searching all over Paris for Marienne, before eventually finding one of her works at an art exposition and getting a hint that the artist was attending an art event in London, where he finally finds her. She is shocked and terrified when she sees him across the way and runs, with him quickly giving chase and following her to an abandoned building where she tries to hied from him. She pulls a knife, threatening him and he violently takes it from her before expressing his confusion that she isn’t happy to see him. She recoils, telling him that he is a murderer. Hurt and offended, Joe tells her to go to prove to her he isn’t what she thinks he is.
After the disappointment of his encounter with Marienne, he goes to a local coffee shop where he is confronted by a stranger who identifies himself as an employee of Love’s father, Ray Quinn. He had been hired to find out if Joe was alive and if so, make sure he wasn’t. In a stroke of luck for Joe, the Quinn hitman is tired of hurting people and offers to let Joe disappear, even providing him with a pre-established alternate identity, or possibly the identity of someone he had disposed of prior to his apparent change of heart - for the price of all the money Joe had taken out of Love’s account the day he had faked his death, and of course murdering the innocent lady who knew he was still alive so as to tie up any loose ends.
Joe follows Marienne to the train station, where he steals her necklace to provide as proof he has followed through, although he allowed her to go.
He takes up his life as Johnathon Moore, living in a flat suggested by a fellow professor, that happens to have a perfect view into the flat of the professor, Malcolm, and his girlfriend, Kate. He has already developed an interest in Kate and her life although he tries to resists his impulses to look closer. However, when he witnesses her being mugged and reluctantly intervenes, Malcolm thanks him by insisting he accompany them to an Elite London hot spot. Introducing him to their inner circle of rich and famous Brits. Uncomfortable and out of place, he encounters Rhys Montrose, an author and possible London mayoral candidate. His autobiography about his childhood with his poor, unstable mother and eventually finding out he was the son of a duke and rising to wealth, intrigues Joe and the two relate over their “shit childhoods”, before Rhys excuses himself as he has television appearance the following morning in Berlin.
He is given absinthe as well as an immeasurable amount of alcohol and goes in and out of confused consciousness throughout the evening. He wakes up at home, unsure of the events of the night before aside from that Malcolm had gotten him home. He is stunned when he walks into his kitchen to find Malcolm’s body on his kitchen table with a knife plunged into his chest. Assuming he has acted out his previous behaviors in his state of inebriation, he goes to work quickly to cover it up. He finds a sawmill nearby and cuts Malcolm’s body into pieces for disposal.
He runs into Rhys again the following day, who has just returned from Berlin as he tells him. Feeling Rhys is the only person he can relate to, he lets his guard down and vents his frustrations to him. Rhys offers him some positive advice and understanding.
Later, Kate insists he must attend a dinner with her friends at the request of her rich socialite friend Phoebe, who he had apparently made quite an impression on during his absinthe fueled walking coma the night before. As he arrives, he is caught off guard by a mysterious text message on an app that had been downloaded to his phone without his knowledge.
“Hello, you.”
The texter stated that his handling of Malcolm had surprised them, having had set him up for Malcolm’s murder assuming he would easily go down for their crimes. Joe quickly takes on the role of detective.
