Eat the Rich is the third episode of the fourth season of You, and the thirty-third episode of the series overall. It premiered on Netflix on February 9, 2023.
Premise[]
As news of a killer targeting the rich swirls, Joe's stalker inches dangerously close to the truth. Joe's efforts to protect Kate take a dark turn.
Plot[]
During a class, students begin to discuss notifications regarding the murder of Malcolm, confirmed by a severed finger, and tied to the murder of Simon. The media referred to them as the work of the “Eat the Rich” Killer.
More mysterious messages push Joe to open up, asking why he killed all those people and threatening to further implicate him in the current murders if he wasn’t willing to cooperate honestly with their questioning.
The police come to question Joe about the last time he had seen Malcolm and anything he knew, at the suggestion of Kate. The mysterious texter says that Kate is a threat and suggests he takes care of it.
After Simon’s funeral, Joe is confronted again by Phoebe’s security staff Vic, who seems to suspect Joe is the killer. Then, receives more mystery texts asking why Kate isn’t dead yet, prompting him to feel she is likely the next target and compelling him to protect her. He follows her despite her clear contempt for his continued presence, and she leads him to a property and through a maze like garden, where she sexually propositions him. He is initially resistant, but gives in fairly quickly and they get busy within the privacy of the garden, Vic watching from a distance. They apparently move the interaction to her apartment, as we see him wake up there, where she catches him retrieving a student’s love letter to Malcolm hidden behind a portrait and kicks him out.
The mysterious texter taunts him again, trying to figure him out and declaring they believe he enjoys killing saying “I bet it makes your dick hard”. Joe is quite offended. He hurries to follow Kate from afar again, ensuring she doesn’t become the next victim. She goes to a crypt where the remains of Malcolm, his finger, is held. He listens in as she attempts to muster grief for him. Again he is confronted by Vic, accusing him of being the killer and finds Malcolm’s ring in Joe’s pocket, to Joe’s surprise, seemingly confirming his suspicions. There is a struggle between the two of them, but Joe prevails, strangling the man to death. He insists that not only did he hate having to do that, his dick had never been softer. He buries the man in the grave of Simon.
When another text implies he enjoyed the act, he initially reacts in anger and begins to respond, but concludes they are looking for connection and want him to be like they are, and instead concedes that it was true.
Joe returns the letter retrieved from Malcolm to his student, Nadia. He receives another mystery text stating its time for them to meet, and Joe states that his only condition is that Kate is left alone. The texter says that is the Joe they’ve been looking for.
